Babymoon

A babymoon is a relaxing vacation taken by couples who are expecting a child. Babymoons are often taken in luxurious locations, as the babymoon is seen as the last vacation that the couple will have alone until their child leaves home when they reach legal age. Babymoon travel is typically taken during the second trimester of pregnancy, when pre-natal complications and pre-term birth risk is at its lowest.

First coined by social anthropologist Sheila Kitzinger in 1994 as a term referencing the post-natal time period that is spent with parent and child, the term has evolved with time to indicate a vacation period.

Sheila Kitzinger was the first person to print the term "babymoon" in 1994 describing the honeymoon-like phase of parenting immediately after giving birth.

The term took on a separate cultural meaning in the early 2000s when celebrity couples’ trips during their pregnancies were dubbed “babymoons” by pop-culture magazines. The term was picked up by travel agencies and bloggers to describe the last trip parents will take sans-child.

In 2016 the term was solidified as a cultural phenomenon when The Babymoon was written and developed by Bailey Kobe as a feature-length film and is set to be released February 11, 2017.

The portmanteau of "honeymoon" and "baby" has been around since the early 1970s. Its first print is traced to 1994, and it began to gain slight traction when used as a marketing tool in 2004 for a luxury resort.

Many celebrities are indulging in the babymoon vacation, taking both luxurious and low-key trips to far off destinations all over the world. Pop culture icons William, Duke of Cambridge & Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, took a babymoon vacation to Mustique in 2013 and once again babymooned during their second pregnancy with a trip to Scotland at Balmoral Castle.
