The BMW M337 is a straight-6 OHV piston engine which replaced the BMW M78 and was produced from 1952-1958.

Built to power BMW's first new car after the Second World War, the M337 engine was a significant update of the M78. The cylinder head was revised, the inlet manifold was a new design, and a reinforced crankshaft with bigger, more modern bearings was used.


The first version of the M337 engine has a displacement of 1971 cc. It produces 48 kW (65 PS; 64 hp) at 4400 rpm and 129 N·m (95 lb·ft) at 2000 rpm.


Applications:

In 1954, a revised engine producing 54 kW (73 PS; 72 hp) at 4400 rpm and 130 N·m (96 lb·ft) at 2500 rpm was released. The compression ratio for this engine is 6.8:1.


Applications:

This version was bored out by 2 mm (0.1 in) , which increased displacement to 2077 cc. Despite the increase in displacement and an increased in compression ratio of 7.0:1, the engine produced no more power than the previous version. However torque increased to 135 N·m (100 lb·ft) at 2500 rpm.
