AJK Medical College, is a medical school located in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. It was established in 2011. Teaching hospitals affiliated with the college are Combined Military Hospital Muzaffarabad, 500 bedded, largest hospital in Azad Kashmir spreading on 70 thousand square meters and Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences, also 500 bedded and one of the oldest hospitals in Azad Kashmir. AJK MC is recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and is listed in FAIMER International Medical Education Directory (IMED) of Medical Schools as well as WHO Directory of Medical Schools.
The College was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani on October 8, 2011. The people of Azad Kashmir had a dire need of a Medical College which was highlighted in the earthquake of 2005 which exposed the severe shortage of local medical facilities as well as doctors and trained nurses as patients had to be transported to the long distances which resulted in mortality.
The candidates are selected by AJK State Entry Test which is conducted by University of Health Sciences, Lahore every year. The college also offers admissions to students from Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, KPK, and Gilgit Baltistan.
AJK MC has introduced internationally accepted Problem-based learning methodology integrated curriculum from its first academic year 2011 in place of discipline based curriculum on the instructions of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. World bodies endorsing this integrated curriculum include, General Professional Education for Physicians, Medical Council of Canada, World Federation for Medical Education and General Medical Council UK. Currently AJK Medical College is the first and only public sector medical school of Pakistan to introduce this teaching methodology. The AJKMC is the only medical school in Pakistan completing full 5 years of medical education with Integrated, Modular, Problem-Based learning. The first batch of 100 doctors has passed out and in House Job now, after registration with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. Some of our graduates have already passed their USMLE Step 1, and PLAB.
