SketchBook Pro, also referred to as SketchBook, is a pixel graphics software application that features a radial/pie-menu user interface, intended for expressive drawing and concept sketching. It was originally developed by Alias Systems Corporation, but is now owned by Autodesk.
SketchBook Pro has painting and drawing tools such as pencils, markers, and brushes. It uses pressure-sensitive features of graphics tablets, tablet computers, and smartphones to create effects similar to traditional materials.
Autodesk SketchBook Pro software also features a screenshot tool for annotation, allowing one to show content during a meeting and add notes as the content is reviewed. The previous/next buttons make it possible to create flipbooks or animations. The program supports layers with import and export of Photoshop (.psd) format. Other features include rulers, symmetry, the ability to customize brushes, create texture brushes, and rotate the canvas.
SketchBook Pro communities exist on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, DeviantArt, Google+, and Autodesk's AREA online community.
When Autodesk acquired Alias in October 2005, they discontinued Sketchbook Pro development for a time. Version 2.0 was released in July 2005, under Alias Systems Corporation.
A beta version of version 3.0 was shown at MacWorld 2008 on display with the Axiotron Modbook. On April 2008, Autodesk SketchBook Pro 2009 was released to the public. In April 2009, the latest version was released, Autodesk SketchBook Pro 2010. Autodesk continues to have a beta program for testing new versions of SketchBook Pro. SketchBook Pro 2011 soon followed and then the latest version, Autodesk SketchBook Pro 6 saw its release in August 2012 and marked a return to conventional version numbering. Throughout May 2014 yet another new version of Sketchbook Pro has begun to be teased on the software application's website, www.sketchbook.com. It has been referred to as both the all-new SketchBook Pro and SketchBook Pro 2015. Videos at the site show off new features including a Flipbook animation tool, Perspective Guides, new blending modes and much, much more. The stated release date is summer 2014, but there is nothing more specific for the time being.
