Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Honorary President,
Atomium – European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy (EISMD) – formerly known as Atomium Culture AISBL - is an international non-profit organisation bringing together several universities, newspapers and businesses in Europe in the first intersectoral platform to promote knowledge sharing and “out of the box” thinking on issues regarding the development of a European knowledge society.
The organisation was launched publicly in 2009 at the European Parliament in Brussels by the former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Michelangelo Baracchi Bonvicini, now Honorary President and President respectively of Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy.
The mission of Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy is to encourage the development of a knowledge society in Europe by increasing the cooperation and dialogue between the institutions engaged, to increase public interest in science and to create an environment to prevent a brain drain from Europe.
In 2006 Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy was formally founded under the Law of Belgium as an International Non-Profit Organisation (Association International Sans But Lucratif).
From 2006 to 2009 Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy developed its start-up engaging universities, newspapers, and research-oriented businesses in Europe. In November 2009 Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy was launched publicly, to coordinate activities with the institutions engaged for the dissemination and knowledge transfer of research.
On 9 November 2009 Giscard d’Estaing and Baracchi Bonvicini signed the European Manifesto of Atomium - European Institute for Science, Media and Democracy.
On May 18, 2010, Giscard d’Estaing and Baracchi Bonvicini presented the Report on European Research and Innovation 2020 together with the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek and the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.
