Athletics at the 1984 Summer Olympics - Men's High Jump

These are the official results of the men's high jump event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. The event was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 10–11 August 1984.

Eight out of 16 event finalists at the 1980 Olympics were absent as a result of the Soviet-led boycott, including all three medalists (although bronze-winning East German jumper Jörg Freimuth had retired in 1982). Another major absence, due to the boycott, was Soviet Union's young Hennadiy Avdyeyenko who won the inaugural 1983 World Championship less than a year prior to the 1984 Olympics. Avdyeyenko later went on to win gold in 1988. Going into the competition, a clear favourite was China's Zhu Jianhua, who won bronze in the 1983 World Championships and who had set a new world record of 2.39 m on 10 June 1984, less than two months before the Games in Los Angeles.

Prior to the competition, the existing World and Olympic records were as follows.

Key

Qualification rule: qualifying performance 2.24 m (Q) or twelve best performers (q) advance to the final.
