Archdeacon of Middlesex

The Archdeacon of Middlesex is a senior ecclesiastical officer in the Church of England. S/he is responsible for the Archdeaconry of Middlesex, which makes up the Kensington episcopal area of the Diocese of London – that episcopal area is overseen by the Area Bishop of Kensington, Graham Tomlin.

The ancient archdeaconry has been a division of London diocese since archdeaconries were first created in England in the 12th century. Historically covering the greater London area other than the City of London and the East End, the archdeaconry was moved to the Diocese of Westminster in 1540 but then re-absorbed back into the London diocese in 1550. It was split on 23 July 1912 to create the Archdeaconry of Hackney and since further split to create the Archdeaconries of Northolt (in 1970) and of Charing Cross (in c. 1989).
