Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker


Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, was an Ezhava warrior lived in the 19th century in Kerala who has also fought against the caste oppression by the upper castes. A Research Foundation was created under the name of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker is Arattapuzha Velayudha Panicker Research Foundation and Cultural Centre.

Velayutha Panicker was born in affluent Kaalisseril tharavadu in Arattupuzha, Karthikappally. The Panickers and Chekavars were fierce warriors from central Travancore. The family famous for their and were proficiency in Kalari. His family was big matrilinear family following Keralas famous Marumakkathayam. His grandfather Valikadavil Perumal Chekavan(Perumalchan) were even proficient in Tulunadan kalari techniques which was not common in southern style of Kalaripayattu. His parents died in childhood. Little Velayudhan studied Ayurveda, Astrology in addition to Sanskrit and Kalripayattu(including Tulunadan techniques). He married Velumpy of Varanapally near Mangalam in 1845. He moved to the house in Varanapally after the Marriage. His massive house in Mangalam was a traditional teakwood Naalukettu, indistinguishable from Nair houses.
