After making a name for himself at Budućnost Titograd and Red Star Belgrade, Drobnjak moved abroad to France and signed with SC Bastia in 1994. He spent the following three seasons at the club, scoring 50 league goals in 100 games. In 1997, Drobnjak switched to fellow French club Lens, helping them win the league in his debut season.
