Angelica Hamilton (September 25, 1784 – February 6, 1857) was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton, who was the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
"I was very glad to learn, my dear daughter, that you were going to begin the study of the French language. We hope you will in every respect behave in such a manner as will secure to you the good-will and regard of all those with whom you are. If you happen to displease any of them, be always ready to make a frank apology. But the best way is to act with so much politeness, good manners, and circumspection, as never to have occasion to make any apology. Your mother joins in best love to you. Adieu, my very dear daughter.”
- Alexander Hamilton describing a 9-year old Angelica Hamilton in a letter to Angelica Schuyler Church
Angelica Hamilton was an extremely lively and active girl in her youth. She is also described as being an extremely clever child, in resemblance to her maternal aunt, Angelica Schuyler Church. It is for this reason that Angelica's parents, Elizabeth Schuyler and Alexander Hamilton decided to name their beautiful child after her maternal aunt, whom they both adored. In addition to being clever, while she was a child, many people would often describe her as being a lively, sensitive, and creative child. As a child, Martha Washington would often take Angelica with her to dance lessons with her own children claiming to have seen a quality in Angelica, which was also present in her own children. Martha believed that Angelica was an extremely creative and graceful child, who would be capable of great dancing if she practiced.
Angelica learned French from her mother. However, Angelica never truly pursued this, and never wound up being truly fluent in the language. In addition to learning French with her mother, Angelica learned piano from her father who taught his daughter to play classical songs on the piano and also taught Angelica to sing. Angelica and her father often sang duets. Alongside her father, she would demonstrate what she learned to her mother and her brother Philip Hamilton. Supposedly, Philip was greatly impressed with her piano playing and having also learned piano from their father, Angelica and Philip often sang duets together. This caused Angelica to become very close to her brother Philip, more so than any of her other siblings.
