Amite City (/eɪˈmiːt/ ay-MEET or /eɪˈmɪt/ ay-MIT; commonly just Amite) is a town in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States, of which it is the parish seat. The population was 4,110 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area.
"Amite" may come from the Choctaw word for "red ant" signifying "thrift". It may be derived from the French , "friendship".
