American Society of Clinical Pathologists

THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL PATHOLOGY

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the premier organization representing all professionals in pathology and laboratory medicine.

Founded in 1922 in Chicago, ASCP unites more than 100,000 anatomic and clinical pathologists, residents and fellows, medical laboratory professionals, clinical scientists, and laboratory students to accelerate the advancement of laboratory medicine to better improve patient care through knowledge, collaboration and global community. Its mission is to provide excellence in education, certification and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists, and laboratory professionals across the globe.

MEMBERSHIP

ASCP is unique among pathology and laboratory medicine organizations in that its inclusive membership brings both pathologists and laboratory professionals together for the advancement of the specialty. The ASCP Board of Directors governs the activities of the Society and is responsible for its fiscal viability and for achieving the mission of the Society. The Board of Directors is composed of the Officers, the Immediate Past President, five At-Large Directors who are Fellows, and three At-Large Directors who are Members, as well as the following ex-officio members: the Chairs of the Fellow Council, the Council of Laboratory Professionals and the Resident Council, the Chair-elect of the Council of Laboratory Professionals, and the Chair of the International Commission. ASCP helps members keep pace with new advances and new responsibilities by providing in-depth education, training, and information resources.

EDUCATION

ASCP provides pathologists, medical affiliates, medical students and laboratory professionals with educational resources and professional development tools including leading-edge publications, continuing medical education, professional certification, networking opportunities, and advocacy in Washington, D.C. ASCP support members’ ongoing learning needs while also helping them meet institutional, licensure, and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) or Certification Maintenance Programs (CMP) requirements. ASCP is accredited with Commendation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (CME) to provide CME for physicians and continuing medical laboratory education (CMLE) for lab professionals. Educational programs include online self-studies and assessments; live teleconferences and webcasts; and workshops and conferences. Nowhere else can pathologists, laboratory professionals, and residents experience real educational value than at the annual ASCP Annual Meeting held every fall, where leading experts share the latest knowledge in their respective subspecialties.

ADVOCACY

The Society also serves as an advocate for patients and laboratory professionals to ensure continued access to testing, technology, and expertise that supports diagnosis and treatment. ASCP represents its members’ interests in Washington, D.C., by taking their issues to Congress, the Administration, federal regulatory agencies, and state governments to continue increasing laboratory standards, improving healthcare and reaching patients in need. The Washington, D.C. office also interacts with patient, allied health, laboratory and medical organizations to build coalitions to further the goals of ASCP.
