American Educational Research Association

The American Educational Research Association, or AERA, was founded in 1916 as a professional organization representing educational researchers in the United States and around the world. It is headquartered at 1430 K Street in Washington, D.C. As a nonprofit serving the education research field, AERA strives to advance knowledge about education and promote the use of research to improve education and the public good.

AERA is led by Executive Director Felice J. Levine and 2015 President Joyce E. King of Georgia State University. AERA's governance structure includes the Council, Executive Board, standing committees, and annual committees. Temporary committees, task forces, and working groups are initiated for other specific needs.

AERA awardees and fellows are celebrated for their excellence in research, outstanding scholarship, and service to the field of education research. New honorees are recognized each year at the Annual Meeting.

AERA claims 25,000 members, including teachers, administrators, directors of research; persons working with testing or evaluation in federal, state and local agencies, counselors, evaluators; graduate students; and behavioral scientists. The broad range of disciplines represented by the membership includes education, psychology, statistics, sociology, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology, and political science.

AERA also publishes books and reports. In 2013, AERA released Prevention of Bullying in Schools, Colleges, and Universities: Research Report and Recommendations, a peer-reviewed report with 11 briefs, addressing bullying from a pragmatic and practical standpoint.

AERA’s Annual Meeting held every spring is considered the largest gathering of scholars in the education research field with approximately 14,000 participants. The five-day conference is a showcase of research studies across education disciplines at all levels.
