Alicia Munroe is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Casualty, played by Chelsea Halfpenny. She first appeared in the series thirty episode "Cradle to Grave", broadcast on 19 September 2015. The character was introduced as a new junior doctor who would be mentored by registrar Lily Chao (Crystal Yu). Halfpenny had previously appeared on the show as a separate guest character so was familiar with the show. Alicia is a doctor undergoing her second year of the Foundation Programme, specialising in emergency medicine.
Alicia is portrayed as bright, bubbly and a try-hard, making her appear naive. Despite this, Alicia is a brilliant doctor who always does more than is acceptable for her patients. Alicia's backstory states that she has grown up in Newcastle where she attended medical school, but recently moved to Holby. The show highlighted the issue of workplace bullying when Alicia began facing constant criticism from her mentor. The character departed the show after appearing in eight episodes, after facing "a huge crisis of conscience" and leaving the hospital.
Nine months later, in August 2016, Halfpenny reprised the role and said she felt "so excited and humbled" to return. Her parents were introduced following her reintroduction to explore the issue of how separation can affect adults. As a result of "emotional turmoil" from the separation, Alicia became embroiled in a love triangle between registrars and brothers Caleb Knight (Richard Winsor) and Ethan Hardy (George Rainsford). The character has been well received by critics, with Elaine McCahill of The Sun describing the character as a "hit with viewers".
Alicia was previewed to viewers through a show trailer released on the show's official website on 15 July 2015. It featured a clip of Halfpenny wearing doctor's scrubs. Halfpenny confirmed her casting in August 2015 via Twitter, expressing her delight at joining the series. She revealed her first episode would air on 19 September 2015.
