Albert Carnesale (born July 2, 1936) is an American academic. He is a former chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles, provost of Harvard University, and dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. In November 1994, while serving as Dean and Provost, Carnesale also served as Acting President of Harvard during the medical leave of President Neil Leon Rudenstine. In May 2011, Carnesale was awarded the Harvard Medal for service to the university. He has also been involved in international diplomacy on nuclear non-proliferation. Through March 2011, Carnesale taught undergraduate and graduate courses at UCLA on topics relating to U.S. national security with Professor Amy Zegart.

Carnesale began his university education at Cooper Union, completing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1957. In 1961 he finished a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Drexel University. Carnesale went on to earn a PhD in nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU) in 1966. He served as a member of the NC State faculty from 1962 to 1969 and has also worked as a senior engineer at Martin Marietta.

Carnesale served as part of the U.S. delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) with the Soviet Union held between 1970 and 1972. SALT I was a major step towards limiting the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
