17-year-old Bianca Maller finds out that her boyfriend, Chad Voyt, cheated on her with a schoolmate, Dory Holland. Bianca and her friends Fallyn Werner and Sarah Patterson plan to teach Dory a lesson. Fallyn and Sarah lure Dory from her house with an invitation to a frat party, and drive her to Wells Canyon, where Bianca confronts her and they fight briefly. Bianca leaves in her car, and as Fallyn and Sarah are about to leave without Dory, Dory throws a rock at Fallyn. Enraged, Fallyn pushes Dory to the ground and strikes her in the head with a large rock, killing her. She and Sarah hide Dory's body in nearby scrubland.
Fallyn and Sarah do not tell anyone about Dory's death. They convince Bianca not to tell anyone about the prank, but Bianca worries and goes to look for Dory at the canyon, to no avail. Two hikers eventually find Dory's body. Bianca's mother, Jacqui, reveals the news of Dory's death to Bianca, who then confesses her role in the prank. Jacqui and Bianca meet with Fallyn and her parents, Michael and Claire, and try to persuade them to go to the police, but Claire lies and says that Fallyn and Sarah were at Fallyn's house on the day of the killing. When Bianca calls Claire a liar, Claire demands that Jacqui and Bianca leave. Bianca calls Sarah and asks her to tell Jacqui what happened, but Sarah also denies involvement. Police search the Mallers' property and find a hairclip belonging to Dory in Bianca's car, which Dory left in Sarah's car and Fallyn put in Bianca's, and Bianca is arrested.
Jacqui calls the Patterson home and asks for Sarah's help, but Sarah's mother, Rita, asks her not to communicate with them. Meanwhile, Bianca is to be charged with murder when blood found on Dory's hand is identified to belong to Bianca, who got a cut when Dory hit her. Jacqui leaves a note in Sarah's car with her phone number, urging Sarah to call her. After school, Fallyn, who has tennis practice that day, sees Sarah read the note, and follows her home. Sarah calls Jacqui and confesses what happened at Wells Canyon, and Jacqui persuades her to go to the police. When Fallyn appears in the room, Sarah drops the phone and it cuts off. Fallyn demands that Sarah tell her what she told Jacqui. Sarah tries to flee, but Fallyn intercepts her, emptying Sarah's inhaler as she suffers an asthma attack.
