The Abaco Slave Revolt is the first revolt to have been recorded in the Bahamas in 1787. The Blacks, some free and some slaves who lived outside the main settlements of Abaco were attacking the white inhabitants with muskets and other weapons. The revolt was a result of the Blacks being treated like slaves when they believed they were promised freedom. Lord Dunmore, the Royal Governor of the Bahama Islands at the time, traveled to the Abacos and granted amnesty to all the Blacks for the restoration of peace and for them to return to work. All of the Blacks who could prove their freedom were declared free.
