The 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade was a United States Marine Corps unit. 5th Tank Battalion, 5th Marine Division deployed with 9th MEB, later assigned to 1st Marine Division as a reinforcement Battalion.
The 9th MEB deployed to Da Nang during the Vietnam War.
5th Tanks mobilized from Subic Bay aboard USS Washtenaw County and landed near Da Nang. The much storied Battalion rotated among Hills 10, 5, 55, 88 and 85 in support of 1st Marine Division operational objectives. Spending time on float aboard USS New Orleans and USS Washtenaw County, 5th Tanks took 15 day rotations and true to their Battalion nickname "The Spearhead", maintained fire support across all of South Vietnam. 5th Marine Division was deactivated in October 1969 and became permanently attached as reinforced 1st Marine Division.
