The 2018 Tour de France will be the 105th edition of the Tour de France, one of cycling's three Grand Tours. The 3,329km race will be the shortest of the 21st century. The start of the 2018 Tour (known as the Grand Départ) will be in the Vendée department, in the region of Pays de la Loire. The departments in the Pays de la Loire region hosted the Tour de France's cyclists on its very first edition back 1903. Since this time, the cities and towns of the Pays de la Loire region have welcomed the Grand Départ of the Tour de France nine times, five of which have set out from the Vendée.

The tour will start a week later than originally planned due to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Unlike previous races there will be 176 riders, instead of 198 riders, due to new rules by the UCI. This will reduce the number of riders on a team from 9 to 8.

It was announced that three, two and one bonus seconds, would be given to the first three riders to cross a specific kilometre of the race, determined in advance. It will have an impact on the general classification, but not the points.

The final itinerary for the route was announced on 17 October 2017.

At 3,329 km (2,069 mi) it will be the shortest of the century. It will be a very technical race. With climbs including the Alpe d'Huez and the Col de Tourmalet, which haven't featured in previous years. For the first time in 60 to 70 years, it will include a section of unpaved roads and 21.7 km (13.5 mi) of cobbles. In the first week of the race two laps of the short, but steep Mûr-de-Bretagne will be included.
