The 2017–18 Ukrainian Second League is the 27th since its establishment. The competition commenced on 14 July 2017. The league returned to the multiple group competition format after it was abandoned in 2013. Final composition of the league was approved at the PFL Conference on 21 June 2017. At the conference it was announced that as part of reform of Ukrainian reform for next season the Second League will be merged with amateurs into a semi-professional competition and will have four groups designed by geographical principle.
The current season competition will have triple round robin format in each group.
Group A commenced their winter break after the Round 7 postponed match was played on 12 November. Group B will begin their winter break after the completion of Round 22 on 19 November. Both Group competitions will resume with the spring session on 31 March.
On 2 October 2017 the Professional Football League of Ukraine (PFL), that administers competitions in the Second League as well as the First League, published for its clubs its draft variant of competition structure reform in which the PFL offers to keep the Second League.
On 21 June 2017, it was announced that 25 teams will play in two divisions, but later FC Balkany Zorya was transferred to the 2017–18 Ukrainian First League and FC Cherkaskyi Dnipro-2 withdrew from the competition, leaving 23 teams in the field.
