The 2017–18 Ligue 1 season is the 80th season since its establishment. Monaco are the defending champions.
There will be 20 clubs in the league, with three promoted teams from Ligue 2 replacing the three teams that were relegated from Ligue 1 following the 2016–17 season. The 2016–17 season saw the return of a relegation play-off between the 18th placed Ligue 1 team and the 3rd placed team in the Ligue 2 on a two-legged confrontation. The Ligue 2 team hosted the first game. All clubs that secured Ligue 1 status for the season were subject to approval by the DNCG before becoming eligible to participate.
Three clubs were promoted: Strasbourg (Ligue 2 champions), Amiens (Ligue 2 runner-up) and Troyes (who defeated Lorient in the relegation play-off). They replace Bastia, Nancy and Lorient, who were relegated.
