City began the season with a 1–0 win over Cambridge United at St James Park. The only goal came from a rebounded penalty kick scored by Reuben Reid, after Cambridge's Jake Carroll handled in the box. The Grecians' first away match of the season resulted in a 1–1 draw at Swindon Town. Liam McAlinden opened for scoring after 27 minutes, though Swindon's Kaiyne Woolery equalised in the second half. Exeter recorded a second 1–0 win at home the following week, this time beating newly-promoted Lincoln City. Again, it was Reuben Reid who netted for the Grecians. City finished the month at the top of League Two following a narrow 4–3 win at Cheltenham Town. The Gloucestershire side had gone 2–0 up after just over ten minutes through Kevin Dawson's double. However the first half finished 2–2 after Jordan Moore-Taylor and Reuben Reid netted for the Grecians. City then found themselves 4–2 up midway through the second half following another goal by Reid and a first for the season from Jake Taylor, though Cheltenham's Dan Holman scored a consolation goal late on. For the team's performance in August, manager Paul Tisdale won the League Two Manager of the Month award for the first time since joining Exeter.
