This is a summary of the year 2016 in British music charts.
The UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart are two of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) that calculates the best-selling singles and albums of the week in the United Kingdom. Since 2004, the charts have been based on the sales of both physical singles and albums and digital downloads. Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming; the ratio used was 100 streams equivalent to one sale (the last year before this was changed to 150:1). Since 2015, the albums chart has also been based on both sales and streaming.
2016 was a bleak time for the UK Singles Chart, with paid-for sales at a very low level due to the increase of streaming. Due to several long chart runs, only 10 singles topped the chart this year (not counting Justin Bieber — "Love Yourself" which also reached number 1 in 2015), the lowest number since 1954, which saw 11. In addition, only one of them lasted a week and only three of them debuted at number 1 – the rest lasted at least two, the first time this had happened since 1993.
In the singles chart, Justin Bieber returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2015 with "Love Yourself". Shawn Mendes, Zayn Malik, Lukas Graham, Mike Posner, Drake, Major Lazer and The Chainsmokers have all claimed their first number 1 single as a lead artist.
In the albums chart, Adele returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2015 with 25. Zayn Malik, The Lumineers, PJ Harvey, Drake, Ariana Grande, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blink-182, Michael Kiwanuka, Viola Beach, Blossoms, Frank Ocean, Ward Thomas, Passenger, James Arthur, Little Mix and Alfie Boe have all claimed their first number 1 album.
