The 2016–17 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is the eighth season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a domestic Twenty20 (T20) cricket tournament in India. It was initially played between 27 teams divided in four groups in round robin format, but it was announced that the 2016–17 season will be played in an inter-zonal format wherein five zones will compete in a round-robin tournament. The tournament is scheduled to be held between 12–18 February 2017 and all matches will be played in Mumbai. Each of the five zones will conduct an independent T20 tournament between its members, which will be used to select member for the inter-zonal league. The interstate tournament will be held from 29 January to 6 February 2017. These tournaments will be hosted at Baroda (West), Chennai (South), Dharamsala (North), Jaipur (Central) and Kolkata (East).

Five teams will compete for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, one representing each zone. Prior to which, 28 members of BCCI will play an interstate tournament on zonal basis. these teams are divided as follows.
