The 2016–17 Sporting Clube da Praia season are in the island division of football (soccer) and is their current season.

Sporting Praia competed in the third edition of their Champions Cup (Taça de Campeões). The club was a Finalist after losing to Boavista on October 30.

The 2016-17 season would have a good start starting second place. Their first match was on November 5, the first held in the earliest part of November. The club defeated Eugénio Lima 0-2 a club formerly known as Lapaloma, their second goal was scored at the first minute of the second stoppage time. Sporting Praia later had a draw with Académica 1-1 a week later and the club was third. The following matches were won by the club, Sporting regained second place after defeating Benfica Praia on November 18, their first meeting. Nigeria's Mbutidem Sunday was the South Zone's leading scorer with 5 and later 6 goals in mid-January and held it up to the last days of the month where Travadores' António Paiva Tavares tied it then surpassed it with seven. Later Sporting became first where it currently stands. Mbutidem Sunday took again the scoring lead for the region. Sporting only had wins and draws as of the 11th round. Sporting made on a seven match winning streak, a success not done in three seasons, the 2013-14 season, the club defeated Os Garridos, Travadores, ADESBA on January 6, 5-0 which became the highest scoring match for Sporting for less than two months, later it became the second for the club, Celtic 0-1 on a rescheduled match, originally for January 13, played on the last day of January, Desportivo, Boavista and lastly Tchadense, from the 11th to the 17th rounds, Sporting made a six match unbeaten streak without conceding a goal. At the 11th round, Mbutidem Sunday was once more the highest scorer for Santiago South with 8 goals. Two scoreless draws were made, first to Eugénio Lima on February 11 and then to Académica on February 17 and Travadores' goal total became third with 22 and put Sporting fourth with 20 goals scored, António Paiva Tavares of Travadores took back the success and Anilton from Boavista became the highest goal scorers of the region numbering eight for the next two rounds. Sporting is still the one as they made a four match winning streak, first over Benfica 0-1 on February 26, in goal scoring they were fourth with 21 goals scored behind Travadores, third behind Boavista and ahead of Bairro. Later on March 5, then they defeated the weak Vitória 7-0, Sporting's next seven match goal in ten months (the last was at end of the previous season) and made Sporting's highest scoring match of the season and second in the regionals behind Boavista's eight goal win, for the fourth time, Mbutidem Sunday was the region's highest scorer and totalled to 28 goals, three behind Boavista's and a goal ahead of Desportivo, Mbutidem Sunday for a week alone and Euclides Mendonça scored two each. The club's third consecutive win came on March 10 and defeated the ailing Garridos 1-0, Sporting's goal totals was third again behind Desportivo's and ahead of Travadores, the region's highest goal totals by player is now shared with Boavista's Anilton once more and continued into the 17th round with eleven goals, also that time, Sporting's unbeaten record succeeded the 28 unbeaten record which lasted from February 18, 2012 until November 16, 2013. A week later, Sporting defeated Travadores 4-3 and the club again conceded goals in a few champioinship matches and their goal totals is now 33 goals overall sharing the total with Desportivo's which is second in the region behind Boavista and continues into the 18th round but with 35, also Sporting made their fifth consecutive win after defeating Bairro 0-2, all two goals were scored by Nigerian Mbutidem Sunday and totalled 46 points, matched it with last season's overall point total and their best win equalled to theirs in 2008 and 2014, as Boavista also won the 18th round match, the club is not inside the championship/qualification zone. Mbutidem Sunday repeatedly became the sole highest scorer in Santiago South, ahead of Travadores's Paiva Tavares and superceded Boavista Praia's Anilton by two goals. The club made then their sixth straight over Celtic 3-0 on March 31.
