The 2016–17 season is Petrolul Ploiești's 87th season in the Romanian football league system, and their first season in the Liga IV. Petrolul came fourteenth in the 2015–16 Liga I. At the beginning of August 2016, Uniunea Suporterilor Petrolisti refounded the club in the Liga IV.
