The 2016–17 Big East Conference men's basketball season began with practices in October 2016, followed by the start of the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November. This season marked the 38th year in the conference's history, but the fourth as a non-football conference, which officially formed on July 1, 2013. Conference play began on December 31, 2016, and concluded in March with the 2017 Big East Men's Basketball Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Villanova is the defending regular season conference champion, while Seton Hall is the defending Big East Tournament champion.

Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier, Providence, Marquette, Creighton and Butler all received bids to the NCAA Tournament. Villanova, the defending national champions, were ousted in the second round by Wisconsin; Providence lost their First Four matchup against USC, while Seton Hall, Creighton, and Marquette all lost in the first round. Only Butler and Xavier advanced past the Round of 32, getting eliminated in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 by eventual national champions North Carolina and runner-up Gonzaga, respectively.
