The 2014 season was IFK Göteborg's 109th in existence, their 82nd season in Allsvenskan and their 38th consecutive season in the league. They competed in Allsvenskan where they finished second, Svenska Cupen where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals and the UEFA Europa League where they were knocked out in the third qualifying round. IFK Göteborg also participated in one competition in which the club continued playing in for the 2015 season, 2014–15 Svenska Cupen. The season began with the group stage of Svenska Cupen on 1 March, league play started on 30 March and lasted until 1 November. A new captain was announced since former captain Tobias Hysén left the squad. Vice captain Mattias Bjärsmyr took over the captaincy.
The league season started on 30 March 2014 and is scheduled to end on 2 November 2014. The official season fixtures were released on 20 December 2013. IFK Göteborg started the season with an away fixture against rivals AIK on 31 March, IFK Göteborg won the match 2–0. After the victory in the opening game, the club lost home against Malmö FF. The season will feature a summer break due to the 2014 FIFA World Cup being held between 12 June and 13 July, IFK Göteborg will play no league matches between 2 June and 6 July. The club will play its last league fixture of the season home against Halmstads BK on 2 November.
After the loss against Malmö FF, IFK Göteborg have played 10 consecutive games without losing, including a 5–0 win home against Åtvidabergs FF on 17 April and 1–1 draw against local rivals BK Häcken on 2 June. But because of the club only have gained 4 victories in 12 matches, IFK Göteborg is only currently placed sixth in the league.
