Since 2011, the Sukma Games had been held annually with the National Sports Council held the games every odd year and the state every even year. The odd year Sukma Games featured only elective sports while the even year Sukma Games featured only core sports.
The 2013 Sukma Games, officially known as the 16th Sukma Games, was a multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur from 28 June to 7 July 2013 which featured 130 events in 18 elective sports that were participated by 3618 athletes from 13 States and Federal Territory, while the 2014 Sukma Games, officially known as the 17th Sukma Games, was a multi-sport event held in Perlis from 24 May to 4 June 2014 which featured 388 events in 24 core sports that were participated by 7815 athletes from 13 States, Federal Territory and Brunei. The 2014 games was the first edition hosted by Perlis, while the 2013 games was the fourth edition hosted by the Federal Territory. Perlis is the thirteenth state to host the Sukma Games.
The final medal tally of the 2013 Sukma Games was led by Selangor, followed by Terengganu and host Federal Territory, while the final medal tally of the 2012 Sukma Games was led by Federal Territory, followed by Terengganu and Sarawak with host Perlis in fourteenth place. Selangorian gymnast Danniel Iskandar Richard and Sarawakian gymnast Esmelda Arecia Menti Alfred Geling were announced as best sportsman and best sportswoman of the 2013 games, while Negeri Sembilanian field athlete Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin and Sarawakian weightlifter Jelinie Empera were announced as best sportsman and best sportswoman of the 2014 games.
The 16th and 17th Sukma Games Organising Committee were formed to oversee the staging of the events.
The 17th Sukma Games had 16 venues for the games, while the 16th Sukma Games had 11 venues for the games, 5 in Kuala Lumpur and 6 in Selangor.
The logo of the 2014 Sukma Games is an image of a lion consists of four colours. Yellow represents enthusiasm, Blue represents unity and harmony in sports, Red represents the fighting spirit, insistence and the bravery in facing challenges and White represents solemnity, pure soul and sincerity. The symbol of the lion itself is the state symbol of Perlis as depicted in the coats of arms of Perlis.
The official mascot of the games is a lion named "Singa Utara". Lion is the icon and identity of Perlis and is known as the Northern Lion. Despite the fact that the lion does not exist in the state, the lion is regarded as the state symbol and it represents the courage, agility, activeness and intelligence of the participating athletes and the caring characteristics of the Perlis citizens. Meanwhile, the mascot of the 2013 Sukma Games is a tiger named Harimau Muda (Youth Tiger), which is also the mascot of the 2011 Sukma Games.The tiger was chosen as the games mascot as it represents courage, activeness and agility of the participating athletes.
