In the 2008 season, Shelbourne finished 2nd in the League of Ireland First Division.

After a turbulent 2007 campaign both on and off the pitch, Shelbourne finished in a respectable 5th place in the FAI First Division. Despite an improved second half of the 2007 campaign, changes amongst the playing staff became inevitable with impending budget cuts.

On December 3, 2007 Shelbourne announced the release of 15 players that completed the 2007 campaign including loanees Mark Leech and Noel Haverty. Central defender Stuart Malcolm would later depart Shelbourne on January 15, 2008 to join Finn Harps bringing Shels' close season departures to 16.

5 players from Shelbourne's 2007 campaign re-signed for the 2008 season. They were James Chambers, Anthony Flood, Alan Keely, Alan Murphy and Mark O'Brien.

2 members of Shelbourne's 2007 Under-21 squad received permanent call ups to the first team for the 2008 campaign. They were Peter McGlynn and Stephen Doran.
