The 2008–09 season was Newport County's fifth consecutive season in the Conference South and they had been ever-present since the introduction of the Conference North & South in 2004.
After the sacking of Peter Beadle following the team's failure to make the play-offs for two consecutive seasons, Dean Holdsworth was announced as manager on 18 May 2008. After a poor first half to the season where County only achieved four wins, the second half was a big improvement, with 12 wins and the beginning an unbeaten streak that would last a third of the way into the next season.
