The year 2003 in film involved some significant events.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King grossed more than $1.19 billion, making it the highest-grossing film in 2003 worldwide and in North America and the second highest-grossing film of all time. It was also only the second film at the time to surpass the billion dollar milestone after Titanic in 1997. It is now, unadjusted, the 12th-highest-grossing film of all time.
Finding Nemo was the highest-grossing animated movie of all time but it has since been overtaken by Shrek 2 in 2004. Toy Story 3 passed it in 2010 (and became the highest-grossing Pixar movie), as well as the 3D rerelease of The Lion King in 2011, Despicable Me 2 and Frozen in 2014, Minions in 2015, Zootopia and Finding Dory in 2016, leaving it currently the eighth highest-grossing animated film after its 3D release and the 36th highest-grossing film of all time (it was once the ninth highest-grossing film).
