The 2002 Football League First Division play-off Final was a football match played at The Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on 12 May 2002 at the end of the 2001–02 season. The match determined the third and final team to gain promotion from First Division to the Premiership, and was contested by Birmingham City, who finished fifth during the league season, and Norwich City, who finished sixth. The teams reached the final by defeating Millwall and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively in the two-legged semi-finals.

Birmingham City qualified for the play-offs by finishing fifth in the league table.



Norwich City qualified for the play-offs by finishing sixth in the league table.



The game remained scoreless at the end of normal time, leading to extra time being played. Norwich scored early in extra time through an Iwan Roberts header from an Alex Notman cross and Birmingham equalised towards the end of the first period of extra time through a Geoff Horsfield goal. There were no more goals and the game finished at 1–1 requiring a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

Two Norwich penalties were missed and Birmingham won the game 4–2 on penalties.

MATCH RULES

Birmingham were promoted to the Premier League whilst Norwich remained in the First Division.
