The 1998 Sukma Games, officially known as the 7th Sukma Games, was a Malaysian multi-sport event held in Selangor from 17 to 26 April 1998. Around 5028 athletes from 13 states, 2 federal territories and 1 invitational team participated at the games, which featured 264 events in 25 sports.
This was Selangor's first time to host the Sukma Games. Selangor is the sixth state to host the Sukma Games after Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor, Perak and Pahang. The games is the last Sukma Games in the 20th century and the 2nd millennium.
The final medal tally was led by host Selangor, followed by Sarawak and Perak. Several national and games records were broken during the games. Sarawakian athlete Chai Song Lip and Kuala Lumpurian swimmer Ho Hsu Ee were announced as Best Sportsman and Best Sportswoman of the games respectively. With little or no controversies at all, the games were a successful ones hosted by Selangor yet with the rising standard of competition amongst the Malaysian states.
The logo of the 1998 Sukma Games is an image of the yellow letter S, which represents the Sukma Games that depicts red number 7 and number 98. Number 7 represents the edition number of the Sukma Games, while number 98 represents the year the Sukma Games was hosted. Red represents the courage and the passionate spirit of the athletes in overcoming the challenges, yellow represents enthusiasm, while white represents fair play and purity. The Red and Yellow colours also represents the state of Selangor.
The official mascot of the 1998 Sukma Games is a White Bellied Eagle named Sang Helang. The White Eagle is a carnivore which hunts for bigger prey like bird, lizards, fish and small mammal, making it an aggressive and powerful predator which rips the flesh and kill its prey using its claws and beak. In the games, the White Eagle is said to represent the agility, speed, courage, bravery and the spirit of the athletes as mentioned in the Olympic motto: Faster, Higher and Stronger.
A total of 828 medals, comprising 264 gold medals, 261 silver medals and 303 bronze medals were awarded to athletes. The host Selangor's performance was their best overall yet and emerged as overall champion of the games.
