The 1997 San Diego Chargers season began with the team trying to improve on their 8–8 record in 1996. It was Kevin Gilbride's first season as the team's head coach, as the Chargers struggled with Stan Humphries missing half the season. Backup Quarterback Craig Whelihan went winless in seven starts. The team's stadium, Qualcomm Stadium hosted Super Bowl XXXII at the end of the season.
