The 1996–97 Women's National Cricket League season was the first ever Women's National Cricket League competition. Five teams took part with the New South Wales Breakers taking the trophy after defeating Victorian Spirit by three games to zero in the final series.
The top two teams after all of the rounds played off in a three-game series to determine who would take home the title.
