F.C. Internazionale Milano endured a crazy season, which ended on a high following the double 1-0 victory against Casino Salzburg in the UEFA Cup final. On the way there, Inter was almost relegated, escaping only by a solitary point. For a club that had never been outside the top flight since Serie A began in 1929, a relegation would have been extremely humiliating, and in the end the club had to thank veteran striker Rubén Sosa for a vital 16 goals scored, all of them vital for the clubs' survival in the top flight. With the downward curve pointing ever sharper, president Ernesto Pellegrini sold the club to Massimo Moratti during the coming season, embarking on a new era the same time as rivals Milan dominated Italy and Europe.
