The 1990–91 season was the first season played in the Southern League since Newport County had last competed in the 1931–32 season. Newport returned to their traditional Somerton Park home after the previous season's groundshare at Moreton-in-Marsh.

The previous season's Hellenic League Cup final in May ended in a 1–1 draw. The replay wasn't played until August, after the next season had already begun and Newport had been promoted to the Southern League.
