The summer of 1989, following a historical Scudetto, saw Inter change their centre-forward: Ramón Díaz was replaced by Jürgen Klinsmann, the third German player in the squad. He immediately scored two goals in the Coppa Italia, helping the team to reach the group stage. Inter did not manage to avoid a failure in the European Cup where they came back after a 9–year absence. Their opponent was a Swedish club, Malmö FF, who won 1–0 the first leg. Drawing 1–1 the second leg, Inter ended their adventure.
They also failed to defend the domestic title, being overwhelmed by Napoli and Milan. However, Inter was able to win the Supercoppa Italiana in a 2–0 win over Sampdoria. Inter struggled in the winter months, a side that lost key points and was also knocked out of the Coppa Italia. The final result was third place, equal with Juventus who was reported as fourth for a worse goal difference.
