John McEnroe was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Kevin Curren. Curren also defeated Jimmy Connors in the semifinal and became the first player ever to defeat both Connors and McEnroe in the same Grand Slam tournament.

Boris Becker won the final 6–3, 6–7, 7–6, 6–4 against Curren becoming the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Wimbledon singles title as well as the youngest ever male Grand Slam singles champion at 17 years, 227 days. This record would eventually be broken by Michael Chang at the 1989 French Open.
