The African Youth Championship 1983 was contested through home and away matches. It also served as qualification for the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship.
The following teams entered the tournament (and played at least one match):
Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya and Mauritius all withdrew: Ivory Coast, Gabon, Angola, Sudan, Togo, Morocco and Swaziland all qualified for the first round.
Senegal withdrew after losing the first leg 0-2 to Gambia; Gambia thus qualified 4-0 on aggregate.
Liberia won 4-3 on aggregate against Guinea (home 2-2 and away 2-1), but were disqualified for using ineligible players in both legs; Guinea thus qualified 4-0 on aggregate.
Swaziland withdrew after losing the first leg to Zimbabwe (1-5): Zimbabwe qualified 7-1 on aggregate.
Equatorial Guinea were disqualified after using ineligible players against Ivory Coast in the first leg (Ivory Coast won 4-1); Ivory Coast qualified 6-1.
The two best performing teams qualified for the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship.
