The 1981 Cossacks were led by second-year head coach Milt Cerf. They played home games at Cossacks Stadium in Rohnert Park, California. Sonoma State finished the season with a record of three wins and seven losses (3–7). The Cossacks were outscored by their opponents 117–245 for the season. This was the last season for the Cossacks with Coach Cerf at the helm. He finished his two years at Sonoma State with a record of 9–11, a .450 winning percentage.
