Two-time reigning champion Margaret Court did not defend her title. Billie Jean King defeated Rosemary Casals 6–4, 7–6 in the final to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 1971 US Open.

This tournament was notable for being the first Grand Slam appearance in which Chris Evert competed in the main draw. She would go on to compete 18 consecutive US Open tournaments right until her retirement in 1989.
