The 1971–72 Iraq FA First Division was the 17th season of what is now known as the League of the Institutes (the top division of Iraqi football from 1948 to 1974), and the first under the name of First Division; it was open to teams from Baghdad. Aliyat Al-Shorta won their fourth league title, and the fifth title in the history of the Police clubs that were merged to form Al-Shorta in 1974.
