Highlights of the 1959 Grand National (British Pathé) |
The 1959 Grand National was the 113th renewal of the world-famous Grand National horse race that took place at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England, on 21 March 1959.
The race was won by 8/1 third-favourite Oxo, ridden by jockey Michael Scudamore and trained by Willie Stephenson. Thirty-four horses ran, including last year's winner Mr. What, who finished third. Wyndburgh was second.
There was one equine fatality during the race when Henry Purcell fell and broke his back at Becher's Brook and had to be euthanised.
