The 1954 Arizona State Sun Devils football team was an American football team that represented Arizona State College (later renamed Arizona State University) in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association (BIAA) during the 1954 college football season. In their third and final season under head coach Clyde B. Smith, the Sun Devils compiled an 5-5 record (3–1 against BIAA opponents) and were outscored by their opponents 228 to 178. Assistant Coaches were Gene Fetter, Tom Fletcher, & Bob White. Arizona State's team captain was QB Dick Mackey. The Sun Devils finished (3-3) at home and (2-2) on the road. All home games were played at Goodwin Stadium in Tempe, Arizona.
During the season opener on September 18th, 1954, Arizona State College defeated Hawaii 28-14 at Goodwin Stadium. This marked the first ever meeting between the teams in school history. The Sun Devils recorded a 28-19 road win over BYU the following week. ASC outlasted Texas-El Paso for a 34-27 home victory on October 2nd, 1954. On October 9th, 1954, the Devils suffered a 19-12 home loss to San Jose State in Tempe. Arizona State College dropped a 14-7 road contest against Midwestern State the following week. The Sun Devils rebounded with a 21-14 home win over West Texas State at Goodwin Stadium on October 23rd, 1954. On October 30th, 1954, ASC earned a slim 14-13 road victory at Hardin-Simmons. The Devils suffered a 34-7 home loss to Cincinnati on November 6th, 1954. This marked the first ever meeting between the teams in school history. In their home finale on November 13th, 1954, Arizona State College fell 20-13 to North Texas State in Tempe. The following week during the rivalry matchup in Tucson, the Sun Devils closed the season with a 54-14 road loss to Arizona.
Arizona State's usual offensive lineup included: (WR Charlie Mackey, LT Frank Bell, LG John Hawkins, C Fritz Province, RG John Hickman, RT Robert Luthcke, TE Karl Grassl, QB Dick Mackey, HB Ruben Madril, FB Bob Sedlar, & WB James Bilton). Dave Graybill, Bart Jankans, Bobby Mulgado, Clarence Osborne, Mike Stanhoff, & Jack Stovall were also on the roster.
Arizona State's leading rusher was James Bilton (104 Carries, 621 Gross Yards, 64 Yards Lost, 557 Net Yards, & 5.4 Yard Avg).
The Sun Devils' leading passer was Dick Mackey (55-114, 793 Yds, 48.2% Completion Pct., 4 TD, & 9 INT).
Arizona State College's leader in scoring was James Bilton (7 TD & 42 Total Pts).
The Devils' leading receiver was Charlie Mackey (10 Receptions, 176 Yds, & 0 TD) and Karl Grassl (10 Receptions, 139 Yds, & 1 TD).
