The 1946 Arizona State Sun Devils football team was an American football team that represented Arizona State College (later renamed Arizona State University) in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association (BIAA) during the 1946 college football season. In their first and only season under head coach Steve Coutchie, the Sun Devils compiled a 2–7–2 record (0–4–1 against BIAA opponents) and were outscored by their opponents by a combined total of 313 to 93. The Sun Devils finished (1-3-2) at home and (1-4) on the road. Assistant Coaches were Al Onofrio and Norris Steverson. All home games were played at Goodwin Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State's team captain was RT Wendell Patterson.

In the season opener on September 21st, 1946, Arizona State tied Williams Air Force Base 6-6 at Goodwin Stadium. The Devils tied a pair of school records finishing with 0 passing completions and 0 passing yards, while also setting a school-record with most passing attempts (15) without a completion in a single game. Collecting -21 net yards, the Sun Devils suffered a 67-0 shutout road loss on September 28th, 1946 against their rival Arizona in Tucson. Arizona State set a school-record for the fewest first downs (3) in a single game and allowed Arizona to collect 199 punt return yards, which set Arizona State's record for most punt return yards allowed in a single game. ASC earned their 1st win of the season on October 5th, 1946, as they outlasted Pepperdine 13-12 in Tempe. On October 12th, 1946, the Devils were pummeled 74-2 at Nevada. The 72-point deficit remains the largest margin of defeat in school history. ASC also set the school-records with 14 kickoff returns and 290 kickoff return yards, which rank 1st for a single game. Arizona State suffered a 13-0 home shutout against Portland on October 19th, 1946. The Sun Devils dropped their 3rd straight game, as they lost a 46-6 contest to Hardin-Simmons on October 26th, 1946 at Goodwin Stadium. On November 2nd, 1946, ASC responded with a 14-7 road victory over New Mexico State. Rex Phelps, Jim Montgomery, and Bob LeSuer combined for a 75 yard forward pass and lateral TD, which set a single game school-record. Jim Montgomery also set the Arizona State school-record with a 90 yard punt. The Devils dropped a 34-20 home game to Texas El-Paso on November 9th, 1946, as ASC recorded only 1 total passing yard. On November 16th, 1946, Arizona State & NAU finished in a 13-13 draw in Tempe, as the Maroon & Gold recorded their 2nd tie of the season. The Devils recorded only 93 net yards. In their home finale on November 23rd, 1946, the Sun Devils were shutout 7-0 by West Texas State in Tempe. Arizona State accumulated only 118 net yards. ASC closed out the season with a 34-19 road loss against Wichita State on November 30th, 1946, as the Devils accumulated -13 net yards.
