The 1892 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book listing Yale as having been selected national champions.

On January 30, college football was first played in the state of Georgia or the Deep South when the Georgia Bulldogs defeated Mercer 7–6. On September 28 the first-ever American football game played outdoors at night took place, between Wyoming Seminary and Mansfield State Normal. The lighting situation proved difficult and the game ended at halftime in a scoreless tie.
