Supreme Court of São Tomé and Príncipe


The Supreme Court of Justice (Portuguese: Supremo Tribunal de Justiça) or the Santomean Supreme Court of Justice is the highest judicial authority of São Tomé and Príncipe located in the capital city of São Tomé and is located at Avenida Marginal 12 de Julho. It is situated next to the city square.

The tribunal acts as the Supreme Court as a constitutional court. Its judges are appointed by the National Assembly, its current judge is Silvrestre da Fonseca Leite.

Its building is of Portuguese colonial neoclassical architecture. It has two red roofs on each side, richly decorated façade, a veranda dominating the front side. The exterior of the front door is grey and has a single door on the other four and are painted black, inbetween are windows totalling four. At the veranda section on the second floor has four windows, the two on each side are two windows with a door in the middle. The exterior today is painted pink and on its rims are coloured white, in the middle are two white lines.

In the colonial and the provincial times, it was used as a colonial court until 1974. Since 1975, it is the national court.
