Every year since 1975, PAHO Foundation and PAHO jointly announce their annual Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, which recognize innovative individuals, programs, institutions, and organizations advancing health in the Americas, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The best known of these awards is the Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Public Health, created in honor of Dr. Abraham Horwitz, former director of PAHO and former president of PAHO Foundation.
